Hey friends! Wow, 3 day weekends are pretty awesome, am I right? I hope you all had a great weekend and I wish you a happy Monday!
To kick off my Half Marathon Training, I’m going to share with you some of the habits of runners that I notice. Let me know in the comments what other habits you notice that I haven’t listed.
1. Spitting (Okay, yeah it’s gross)
We all do it. When you’re walking on the pavement, sidewalk, parking lot, anywhere where a runner might have crossed and you see a big wod of spit…yeah, that’s us. We do it a lot. It’s a habit, we don’t even think about it.
And I know I’ve had my fair share of getting some of a runner’s spit on me during a race. Nasty.
2. Constantly looking at our GPS watch
I just realized how much of a habit this was when I went running without my Garmin the other day (<–OMG). I looked at my arm a total of 5 times within 1 mile. Its that bad.
3. Running while Driving…wait what?
Yeah, I know you do it. Driving up a big hill thinking to yourself, “I’m so glad we have cars. I would hate to run up this” or “Man, this would be a great hill for hill repeats!”
Or looking at the mileage to a destination, “10 miles? Dude, I could run that.”
4. Dreaming of running a race out of state or country.
Yepp, we all want to run Boston.
You’d love to plan a trip to Honolulu and tackle that marathon.
Or, better yet, how about the London marathon. You think, “One day! One day!” Aw, you’re so hopeful. I like it.
5. Planning Your Vacation around Running
Okay, I know this one pretty well. Myself, my father, and my mother are all runners. So, when we pick a place to vacation at, here’s how a conversation might go, “Can we run there? Not too much traffic, you think? How far can we run? Wait…there better be a place to run. I’m not going—oh, okay. 2.5 mile road. Alright, we can do that. Whew!”
6. Taking more than 1 day off, we begin to panic.
If I take off 2 days in a row…there better be a good reason. I start stressing. I know we all do. I see it all over twitter and instagram. Gosh, it cracks me up at how ridiculous we are. But I guess that’s why they call us crazy, right?
7. Magically tricking ourselves into running.
We’ve been working all day. We obviously don’t want to run. We somehow get our running shoes on, we head out the door, turn our GPS on, all the while we repeat in our heads, “Do not want to run. Do not want to run. Do not want to run.” Suddenly, we’ve finished 3 miles and we end up doing 2 extra because, “Hey I gotta hit my mileage goal for the week!”
8. Long runs are a weekend thing no matter what.
Um, I don’t know about you, but I do long runs all year around. Yeah, I take a week or two off of the long runs here and there. But 8-12 mile long runs are still in my routine when I’m not in training mode. I know a freaking ton of runners who still do like 13 mile long runs…for fun…Are we crazy or what? Who does that
9. Posting all our runs on social media.
And just for fun, take a look at the top 10 marathons (link down below)

Have an awesome MONDAY!
Questions:
- What’s a habit of a runner that I didn’t mention?
- Do you have a weird habit in general?
- If you’ve ran a marathon, which one was your favorite?
Haha, this made me laugh! I am definitely a spitter, it’s not cute, but it’s totally necessary!
Very necessary! lol
Hahaha, I LOVE this! I’m a chronic garmin-checker. It’s quite the problem! My other bad habit that totally annoys my coworkers is that I’m constantly talking about running! It just manages to seep its way into conversations all the time!
Same here, running always gets into the convos no matter what with a runner! 😀
All of these were so spot on! Especially the whole planning your vacation around races – that’s why I run the Disney marathon : )
Haha! Since you mentioned that, I need to look into running a Disney race! Which one do you run?
Ha, great post! And so true….
Would feel awful without my Garmin!
It’s crazy how much we love our garmin! But that thing is a lifesaver!
I chew gum when I run… Kind of an odd habit..
I do that too sometimes! Hate it when my mouth gets dry!
Hahaha these are too funny! And relatable. I do long runs year round too – it’s just a part of my weekend! I try not to look at my garmin more than once a mile!
Thanks for commenting! 😀 long runs = my life. LOL
