Hey Y’all! I’m excited about this post…been working on it for a while and wanted to share it so much!

me..

So…today’s topic is Grains. Do you eat them? Do you like them? Why do you eat them?

Well, I’m going to answer a few of those questions from my point of view…let me know what you think about grains down in the comments below and don’t forget to list a few of your favorites!

top 4 fave whole grains

Q&A

Do I eat grains?

Yes, as a matter of fact I do! Now, I can’t say that grains are for everyone…but if you feel like you can eat grains, then by all means, I support you!

Do I like grains?

I think some people force themselves to eat oatmeal and rice, thinking that they HAVE to in order to be healthy…and my thoughts on that, DON’T eat them if you don’t LIKE them. The end. But yes, I absolutely love grains and cook with them all the time!

Why do I eat Grains?

I eat whole grains because:

  • A good source of complex carbohydrates (which are better for you and provide you with sustained energy)
  • Whole grains contain bran & fiber (which helps keep your colon moving!)
  • Whole grains are a natural source of valuable antioxidants, as well as vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B6), vitamin E, magnesium, iron and phytochemicals which, working together, help reduce the risk of some cancers.

Those are just the top 3 reasons!

How should I cook my grains?

Well, I do know that grains needs to be soaked. Soak your grains, sprouts, and nuts! I will usually soak rice for about 1-8 hours before cooking it to release the phytic acid. Phytic acid binds with other nutrients and inhibits the absorption of those nutrients! Such as; zinc, calcium

One more thing on grains, okay?

Chew! When you’re eating, you should always chew, chew, and chew! Don’t halfway chew and swallow…grains need to be chewed rather well. There are enzymes located in the mouth that are only released when you chew and the salivary amylase (that’s in YOUR mouth) is needed to digest grains and carbohydrates…so the more you chew, the better your grains will digest! We need to be considerate of our digestive system! Plus, a quick fact: Chewing increases your energy! Ha, very interesting, right?

Here are some meals I’ve made with these grains!

Anyone else love the show “Good Eats” with Alton Brown? My fave cooking show by far!

Thursday

I started the morning off with fresh made juice

Then, I left home and headed out to go do some social media marketing for someone, so once I arrived…I was starving. Juice just doesn’t cut it! Good thing I brought along a Clif Crunch Bar! Yes, these things are amazing. Go try one. Might not be the #1 healthiest bar out there, but sheesh, its delicious!

One of the highlights of my day was heading to EarthFare to make a salad from the fresh salad bar!

In the mix: Mixed salad greens, cauliflower, bell peppers, onions, cucumber, just a few pieces of cantaloupe, grapes, strawberries, and pineapple, grilled chicken, 1/2 boiled egg, green olives…When I got home, I added my own feta cheese and dressing! I’m just weird I guess.

Also, I drank a delicious Zevia along with it! Go try one! They are delicious, especially since it’s getting so warm out…these make a great choice over artificial sugar & calorie filled junk sodas. Zevia for the win!

Got home around 3:20 and that meant coffee and getting myself pumped up for an easy 3 mile run…HAHA, that turned around! I ended up running a medium paced 5.2 mile run without stopping.

Also picked up a new bright RBX shirt from TJMaxx (love that place) that was $7.99…had to share that. They have amazing deals like no other!

Sports Bra is a Jockey brand bra. Loved it! It was very comfortable ($12.99) and had criss-cross straps which I like!

For dessert…I had KEY LIME PIE!

Okay, no no no, I didn’t really. I sort of did though. I had picked up a Fage Key Lime Pie yogurt at Publix and it tasted just like Key Lime Pie!!

Taking a Break

Hey loves!

I took a break over the weekend and yesterday to just step away from the blogging world. I was in it all last week and I knew my brain just needed a break. It still does, but I thought I would pop in and blog just a little.

Friday we headed over to Costco and Earthfare to do a little grocery shopping…and we also stopped at Jason’s Deli to devour their salad bar.

Look, their salad bar rocks…its got all kind of stuff.

And every time we go to Earthfare, we get a cold Zevia to drink on the way back home. It’s just a thing.

Saturday I decided to spend my weekend eating clean whole foods…and that is what I did.

I started with a spinach, kale and banana smoothie and then a really good workout!

Lunch I had yogurt and almond butter with apple slices.

Then I took my sister to Forever 21 to find her a dress for homecoming.

When I got back my older sister and her husband were at the house.

While everyone else was eating hot dogs, I ate broccoli, eggs, peas, and onions topped with sauerkraut

Sunday, I started with another green smoothie

Hey y’all!

We got ready for church (I BROUGHT OUT THE BOOTS!!!) Oh yeahhhIMG_20130922_094904

Church was just so, so, so powerful Sunday. So happy I was there!

IMG_20130922_144147

Lunch/dinner was pretty great…mostly the same at Saturday’s except no egg, but chicken!

So not a super special weekend or anything except I’m quite proud of myself eating so clean over those two days. I’m actually still doing it because I began to feel so good from all the veggies, fruits, and good proteins, no packaged crap.

I’m still drinking green smoothies and eating lighter. Except I might have had my fair share of almonds.

Anyway, you all have a great Tuesday!
